New York family law matter: domestic violence

As hard it may be for some people to believe, domestic violence is a significant problem, and it is one that affects numerous families in New York and all across the country. This type of behavior does not usually start at the beginning of a relationship, and, in fact, it can be very difficult to see it right away. If controlling or violent behavior does develop, it is not uncommon for a victim to feel stuck in the situation. Domestic abuse is most certainly a family law matter, and, with the help of counsel, a victim of such violence can take legal action in order to remove him or herself from the relationship.

There are many different forms of domestic violence. Some have a physical component, while others are more verbal and/or psychological in nature. The commonly discussed forms of domestic abuse are:

  • Physical abuse
  • Emotional abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Reproductive coercion
  • Financial abuse
  • Digital abuse

Those involved in any of the above domestic violence situations will typically feel as if they have little-to-no control over their lives. Abusers can be very good at making their victims feel they are responsible for the abuse. Victims need to know this is far from the truth. As frightening as it may be, it is possible to regain control of one's life after enduring abuse.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone. A person who is married to his or her abuser can pursue legal remedies to help with this family law matter, including filing for divorce -- if desired. All victims, whether they reside in New York or elsewhere, who find themselves in such situations can pursue criminal charges against their abusers and/or seek orders of protection. Assistance is available to help with whichever course of action is chosen.
