New Federal Law Bans Bath Salts

Bath salts have made a lot of news recently because of the effects that they are having on the users of these designer drugs. Often, the user demonstrates signs of super-human strength, and there have been countless examples of law enforcement having to take drastic measures to slow those using the drug.

Bath salts have also resulted in many people being admitted to local emergency rooms, and have prompted many cities to ban there sale. Local bath salt bans have been largely ineffective, however, as sales are either just transferred to the Internet or the chemical makeup of the baths salts are altered just enough to get around the ban yet achieve the same high.

Now, federal authorities are fighting bath salts and other synthetic drugs. In July 2012, President Barack Obama signed into law a bill that bans many popular bath salts and varieties of synthetic marijuana.

The federal law not only bans these synthetic drugs, but also bans their sale over the Internet. To prevent the makers of synthetic drugs from just altering the formula used to create them, the new law also proactively bans synthetic drugs yet to be created.

Further, the law adds the two main active ingredients of bath salts, mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone, to the Food and Drug Administration's list of substances that cannot be sold or prescribed for any reason.

The new law indicates the seriousness by which federal authorities are taking bath salts; even going so far as to severely punish people for mere possession of bath salts.
