Divorce during or after the holidays

While the holidays are generally filled with love, happiness and family, there are numerous couples in New York and elsewhere for whom this time of year is difficult and stressful. This is particularly true for those whose marriages are on the rocks -- so to speak. Divorce is never an easy subject to broach, and doing this during the holiday season is something that many may wish to avoid.

Filing for divorce can be done whenever a couple is ready to take that step. Some may not let the end-of-year events deter them from starting this process, and that is okay. Studies have shown, though, that more couples are choosing to wait until after the holiday season is over before they proceed with a divorce filing. According to a recent report, divorce rates seem to spike in January and peak near the end of March.

There are various reasons as to why this is the case. Some believe it will be easier on their children, and others may be concerned with the financial aspects of filing for divorce. As November and December are typically months that budgets are stretched due to holiday spending, some may choose to put off adding legal expenses into the mix.

At the end of the day, when a couple in New York files for divorce will be determined based on their own particular circumstances. This may be during or after the holidays. When ready, legal counsel will be available to assist the client in achieving a settlement that serves his or her best current and future interests.
