NY Law Firm Defending Against Citations for Excessive Speeding

The higher the speed you were clocked at, the more serious your situation. The more serious the situation, the more you will need the experienced, effective legal representation you will find at Larkin, Ingrassia & Tepermayster, LLP.

Our attorneys help people minimize the consequences of traffic citations for excessive speeding, reckless driving and other serious traffic violations. Our practice is based in the traffic courts of Orange County but includes a number of the traffic courts in the surrounding counties of New York as well.

Are you licensed in Canada or another state but were ticketed in New York? Our lawyers may be able to resolve your high speed ticket without you having to return to the area. To learn more about what we can do to help call or contact our firm today.

If an officer determines that your speed was "excessive" (far higher than the posted limit and much too fast for conditions), you may also be given a citation for reckless driving. Reckless driving is a separate offense that has its own penalties. To give you a general idea of what New York's penalties are for "excessive" speeding, see the chart below:

Speed Maximum Sentence Approximate Fine Driving Points
 11-20 mph over 15 days $300 4
 21-30 mph over 15 days $300 plus 6
 31-40 mph over 30 days $600 plus 8
 41+ mph over 30 days $600 plus 11

Keep in mind that different traffic courts may have different fines for speeding. Also keep in mind that what counts as "excessive" speed or reckless driving depends on the context.

For instance, if there has been a snowstorm and the road conditions are terrible, you could be given a speeding ticket even if you were not actually driving faster than the posted speed limit. Similarly, driving 11 miles per hour over the speed limit on an Interstate is not the same as driving 11 miles per hour over the speed limit on a residential street, near a school or around a road construction work zone.

In any case, our knowledge of New York's traffic laws and local traffic courts have helped us to get tickets dismissed, speeds reduced and tickets changed to non-moving violations for many of our previous clients.
