On August 24, 2010 Bryan Dunn was sentenced to 300 hours of community service and 5 years of probation for his part in a million-dollar Walmart theft ring.
Judge Jeffrey G. Berry handed down the sentence Monday in Orange County Court, saying Dunn's previous years of volunteer community service should count for something. Dunn pleaded guilty in March 2009 to felony grand larceny and conspiracy.
Dunn, who was at one time Maybrook's assistant fire chief, was a longtime employee at Walmart and used his inside knowledge to help a Town of Montgomery police officer and others - including two other police officers - steal roughly $1 million in goods from the stores in Newburgh and the Town of Wallkill over a six-year period, said Assistant District Attorney Karen Edelman-Reyes. Dunn turned himself in early, cooperated against the others and profited the least from the scheme - his restitution is $25,000.
Dunn, accompanied by his lawyer, John Ingrassia, apologized for his actions, and said he was ashamed of what he did - betraying his employer, and betraying the fire service he was a part of for 20-plus years.
